Luna Negra celebrates the variety of Latin dance and its rich cultural heritage by integrating the traditional with a contemporary edge. Working to break down stereotypes about Latin dance, the ensemble is composed of dancers neither clothed in traditional folkloric dress nor dancing strictly traditional dance styles such as Flamenco, Tango or Salsa as performed by traditional Latino dance groups or at the salsa club on Saturday nights. Rather artistic director, Eduardo Vilaro’s choreography takes the essence of the traditional dances, rich musical heritage and folkloric traditions of Latino cultures and combines them with contemporary movements to create a complex mix of emotional, sensitive and sensual dances that integrate the distress felt by immigrants, the longing for a lost loved one, or simply the passion for dancing.
