The awe-inspiring Hamburg Ballet – considered one of the world’s greatest companies – makes its Chicago
debut during Season 9 at the Harris Theater, presenting the Chicago premiere of “Nijinsky," by acclaimed
American ballet dancer and choreographer John Neumeier. Nijinsky’s life and work inspired Neumeier to create
three ballets, and “Nijinsky” is of those ballets.
It is based on the life and legend of one of the most exceptional artists of our century – Vaslav Nijinsky. As a dancer, Nijinsky experienced popularity, publicity and fame comparable to only that of Rudolf Nurejev during his time. It was as a choreographer, however, that Nijinsky established a new direction – a dance vision pointing toward modern choreography.
The ballet begins in a reconstruction of the “Festsaal” in the Suvretta-Haus, a hotel in St-Moritz, the room of Nijinsky’s last performance as a dancer: It is a moment of transition, a place of memory and premonition. Neumeier interweaves this historic situation with flashbacks to events in Nijinsky’s past and personal experiences, as well as his most important roles as a dancer, such as Le Spectre de la Rose, Pertrushka and the Golden Slave. The score for Nijinsky includes music by Chopin as well as Rimsky-Korsakov’s haunting “Scheherazade."
