NABUCCO by Giuseppe Verdi
da Corneto Opera Orchestra & Chorus conducted by Philip Bauman
Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
The performance will run approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes including one intermission.
A biblical tale, Nabucco chronicles the oppression of Zaccaria and the Jews by Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar and his spiteful daughter, Abigaille. Nabucco was an inspiring call to arms for Italians fighting for freedom in Austria shortly after its premiere, with “Va, pensiero (The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves)” adopted as Italy’s unofficial national anthem. da Corneto proudly celebrates the 200th birthday of our favorite composer, Giuseppe Verdi, with one of his first great successes – a story of love, jealousy, conversion, forgiveness and the quest for power.
da Corneto Opera in the Press
“The Chicago arts scene has spawned many companies that started small and went on to greatness, with Steppenwolf Theatre, Hubbard Street Dance and the Second City among them. If fortune continues to smile upon da Corneto Opera, it should join these august ranks. From the excellent vocal soloists, to the sensitive conducting… to the vigorous orchestral performance, it’s definitely the equal of many larger, more established and better funded regional opera companies (Michigan Opera Theatre comes to mind).” Laura Emerick ~ Chicago Sun Times
da Corneto Opera continues to amaze. There’s a supposed lack of Verdi singers worldwide, but da Corneto has managed Verdi with style, distinction and often thrilling vocalism. Richard Covello ~ Chicago Tribune
