Hubbard Street Dance Chicago
The first American dance company to do so, Hubbard Street presents Casi-Casa by famed Swedish master choreographer Mats Ek. This major new acquisition was first staged for Danza Contemporánea de Cuba in 2009 and is a 40-minute composite of two earlier works by Ek, The Apartment and Fluke. Casi-Casa alludes eloquently to dramatic situations through subtle encounters. A lazy, domestic coziness is implied by home appliances on stage—but darker, more somber tones emerge.
Hubbard Street’s Winter Series also features Aszure Barton’s elegant, enigmatic Untouched, created for and premiered by the Company in 2010. The work features music by saxophonist Curtis Macdonald, pianist Njo Kong Kie, and Russian-born violist Lev “Ljova” Zhurbin.
Also on the program are two short pieces by Resident Choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo: Blanco, a deeply structured women’s quartet, and PACOPEPEPLUTO, a trio of men performing to crooners’ classics from the ’50s and ’60s.
