MIX at SIX: The Academy Repertory Dance Company
Chicago Academy for the Arts
Chicago Academy for the Arts is home to the premiere Dance program for conservatory-bound pre-professional dancers in Chicago. In this special MIX at SIX engagement, advanced dance students will perform the world premiere of a new work by choreographer Brian Brooks. Brooks is the inaugural Choreographer in Residence for the Harris Theater; he has also choreographed for students at The Juilliard School, The Boston Conservatory, The School at Jacob’s Pillow, and Harvard University. He dedicated 12 years as a Teaching Artist of Dance at the Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education and has been on the part-time faculties of both Rutgers University and Princeton University.
Alumni from Chicago Academy can be found at such companies, conservatories, and universities as: New York City Ballet, Juilliard, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, NYU, Houston Ballet, and dozens more. The Dance Department is led by Randy Duncan. Duncan is a native of Chicago, who began his dance training with Ms. Geraldine Johnson and credits much of his artistic development with Harriet Ross and Joseph Holmes, has the unique privilege to be a three-time recipient of Chicago’s prestigious Ruth Page Award for Outstanding Choreographer of the year. Mr. Duncan’s work has been seen in the companies of Joffrey Ballet, Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, River North Chicago Dance Company, and many others.
During the Brooks piece, Academy dancers will be joined on stage by The Chicago Bucket Boys! TCBB is made up of a group of youth who started out as strictly Street Performers and immediately rose to become the most visible and memorable Chicago has ever seen.
